Denial

I'm surprised at some arguments I hear regarding our responses to the pandemic from many of my Christian Evangelical friends. The line of thinking goes like this: our life is always surrounded by danger, there is no such thing as 100% safety so our efforts at locking down are an overreach on the part of government or an overreaction brought about by our liberal 21st century thinking. The answer to me is obvious, this is a pandemic, a plague and the best way to tackle plagues is to isolate it so it does not spread to the population, by preventing it's spread we kill it. It seems to me that the argument is assuming at the onset that this cannot be contained and is now a regular part of our existence, we will have to live with it and be brave. In other words it is conceding defeat. It is also very shortsighted, it is supported by arguments that our institutions will fail if we continue this lockdown process and our rights compromised. I think these measures are temporary, something we have to do to fight, so that we can regain the normalcy we once had. If we did not do these difficult measures then eventually this virus will take over then our institutions will really fail and way of lives will change for good.China, New Zealand, and Australia are examples of countries where a lockdown has worked and then lifted after cases have decreased, but I fear most people think this way because they believe in conspiracies to overthrow freedoms and destroy the right to worship.
